Chicago Bears: Predictions for David Montgomery in 2019
By Usayd Koshul
As the Chicago Bears get closer to the 2019 NFL season, what are some predictions for rookie running back David Montgomery?
When the Chicago Bears decide to trade up for a player in the NFL Draft, the team does so with the expectation that said player will become a major part of the Bears offense or defense. 2019 was no exception with the Bears moving up 14 spots to trade up for Iowa State running back David Montgomery.
There are multiple reasons that the Bears decided to trade up for Montgomery. First, he fits what the Bears are trying to do in the running game. When looking at Montgomery, one cannot overlook the fact that he looks like a younger version of former Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt.
Montgomery can impact the game in more ways than just being a runner. While in college, he averaged 8.2 yards per reception over a three-year period. Despite not having breakaway speed, he still can make an impact out of the backfield catching the football which is what makes him a dual-threat weapon in the Bears offense.
Montgomery is also a high volume running back meaning he’s able to be a workhorse when called upon. After racking up nearly 3500 yards in college and staying healthy, it’s clear that he can be the primary running back for any NFL team.
As Montgomery enters his rookie year with the Bears, what are some reasonable predictions for him? Additionally, when will he end up taking over the starting job by? Will he end up leading the Bears in rushing yards? We’ll answer these questions as we dive deeper into what to expect from Montgomery in 2019.
