2. Best addition in the NFL Draft: RB David Montgomery

Whenever the Bears trade up for a player, it’s because the team believes that player can have an impact. It was the same mindset when the Bears traded up for Leonard Floyd and Mitchell Trubisky in 2016 and 2017.

With no first or second-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft due to the trades for Khalil Mack and Anthony Miller, the Bears had just five picks in 2019. Many wondered how the Bears would add to the roster with such limited draft capital.

However, Iowa State running back David Montgomery was drafted by the Bears for multiple reasons.  Not only were the Bears impressed by his non-football traits such as character and work ethic, but Montgomery’s contact balance, elusiveness, and vision were all reasons as to why the Bears drafted him.

Perhaps the biggest reason that the Bears drafted Montgomery is because he’d be an ideal fit inside Matt Nagy’s offense. As of right now, Montgomery looks like he’ll be eased into the offense.

It is however also possible that Montgomery ends up being the week one starter but to do so, he’d need to have a really strong training camp. However, it is fair to expect him to eventually end up being a full-time starter after the Bears bye week.

While critics will say that the Bears gave up too much for Montgomery, he’s clearly a sleeper for offensive rookie of the year. He has a prime opportunity to rise to the occasion and end up being a major centerpiece of the Bears offense.
