Reason #3: Timing just isn’t right for the Bulls

What’s most frustrating about this situation for me has little to do with the Bulls poor reputation around the league and their nightmare front office. Davis is likely going to be a free agent after next season. But it’s not that simple.

While Davis will probably be a free agent, the Lakers will have the best chance to sign him as that’s where he’s wanted to be all along.

However, if the Bulls were in a better position to acquire talent, I’d be more intrigued by Davis’ words. Whether they want to admit it or not, the Bulls are still in the process of rebuilding. It’s tough to entice a superstar to join during that process.

The Bulls have a good, young core of players like forward Lauri Markkanen and guard Zach LaVine. They lack a clear star, and while Markkanen may develop into one, that’s yet to be seen.

If for whatever reason Davis wants to leave the Lakers, there are going to be more enticing options around the NBA. Davis was clear that the reason he left the Pelicans was that they weren’t close to contending for an NBA title.

The Bulls aren’t close either. It’s frustrating because if Davis could opt-out in two or three seasons, who knows where the Bulls would be?

For now, Bulls fans will just have to think about what could’ve been. However, there’s still that sliver of hope that the impossible will happen next summer.
