Reason #1: Davis’ words weren’t convincing

When Davis sat down for an interview at Nike Rise camp last week, he spent a lot of time explaining just how much the city of Chicago meant to him. He also dropped this quote about playing in Chicago at some point in the future (Via Bleacher Report):

"I mean, (this is) definitely hometown. If the opportunity ever presents itself and when that time comes, I’d definitely consider it."

So there you have it. That’s the extent of what Davis said about playing for the Bulls. It doesn’t exactly scream that he’s got the Bulls on his radar for the future. Though if he did, I doubt he’d come out and say as much.

It seems as if Davis was more interested in giving props to the city of Chicago and the culture of basketball he grew up with rather than actually praising the Bulls. It makes sense, Davis proudly repped Chicago in the past and continues to do so.

But it’s a bit puzzling to me that some publications took this quote and ran with it as if Davis was saying he’s coming home at some point in the future. He basically said he’d consider playing there if he had the chance as a free agent.

The very job of a high profile free agent is to consider where to play and make that decision. It’s great that Davis would consider the Bulls, but to me, it doesn’t mean much seeing as he’d certainly consider a lot of other options.

At the very least, Davis didn’t tear down the organization or talk about the team’s reputation around the league, so that’s a positive.
