The Chicago Blackhawks are looking to have some serious depth up front next season, and having a legit second line is the key.

Depth is the key to being a playoff team in the National Hockey League and the Chicago Blackhawks might have a lot of that at the forward position in 2019-20. They might be able to run four really good lines that can defend and contribute offensively. This could be an exciting group to watch.

The Blackhawks could have one of the better second lines in the league if they all perform well and they play their cards right. Playing their cards right could hinge on resigning Brendan Perlini. He would play right wing on this line with Alex DeBrincat on the left and Dylan Strome in the middle. It could be a really nice trio, and if they needed to change it up Perlini could play up and down the lineup.

Perlini is 23 years old and is currently an unrestricted free agent. He came to Chicago from the Arizona Coyotes along with Strome for Nick Schmaltz. In 46 games for the Blackhawks, he had12 goals and 3 assists for 15 points. this is decent production as far as goals are concerned and he didn’t find a place on that second line until later on. If he can get resigned and have that type of goal-scoring touch it would be great news for the Blackhawks. His 12 goals in 46 games for Chicago are a 21 goal pace over 82 games.

If Perlini scored 21 goals next season his team would be so thrilled. That would mean the Blackhawks need to extend him due to his RFA status. A 2-3 year deal for around a million or two would be perfect for him to prove he can score goals over a whole season. There is always the chance that the Hawks package him in a trade to avoid the contract but it appears that it would be ideal to keep him and see what he can do.

Schmaltz was doing well with Arizona upon his arrival but he had a season-ending injury while Strome lit it up with the Blackhawks. If they end up being a wash then Perlini could be what makes sure the Hawks win the trade if they haven’t already just with Strome alone. Either way, keep Perlini! He is could be worth it.
