Chicago Bears Training Camp Preview: Running backs

3. Projecting the final running back group for the 2019 season
As of right now, it’s fair to expect the Bears to carry four running backs on the roster for 2019. We already know that Tarik Cohen, Mike Davis, and David Montgomery will be locks. However, the final spot will be interesting as it will come down to two things: What the Bears value and how the Bears will use that fourth running back.
If the Bears want another powerful North-South runner, then the team will likely end up going with Ryan Nall. Nall’s size (6-foot-2, 237 pounds) make him an ideal option if the Bears are looking to run up the middle in short yardage situations.
However, if the team is looking for someone who brings speed to the table and can emerge as a potential rotational player on offense, then going with Kerrith Whyte will be the best option available.
Come week one, it’s likely that we see Mike Davis in the backfield starting for the Bears. While most would make the argument that David Montgomery should be the one starting, the Bears will likely want to ease Montgomery into the lineup.
Between Cohen, Montgomery, and Davis, it’s fair to expect Cohen getting a majority of the touches early on in the season. The reason for this is simple: Mike Davis cannot carry the entire load for the Bears and the team will want to allow for Montgomery to get a feel for what an NFL game is like before giving him the keys to the backfield.
