Chicago Bears Training Camp Preview: Running backs
By Usayd Koshul

With training almost here for the Chicago Bears, we’ll preview the running back position as the team kicks things off in Bourbonnais, Illinois
For the Chicago Bears, running back has always been one of the more stable positions for the franchise in the Ryan Pace era. There’s always been at least one or two solid players for the Bears in the backfield.
In 2018, the Bears carried four main running backs on the roster throughout the regular season:
While each of these four names listed above was on the 53-man roster, a fifth running back, Ryan Nall, was on the practice squad. Whenever Nall saw the field in 2018 during the preseason, he made the most of every opportunity, however, it wasn’t enough to beat out Cunningham or Mizzell.
Unfortunately, in 2018, guys like Howard saw a decline in their play and were eventually shipped out to make room for players that would fit Matt Nagy’s offense. Additionally, the Bears also made some position changes, moving Mizzell from running back to wide receiver.
Now, heading into training camp for the 2019 season, the Bears currently have five running backs on the roster. Of the five names listed below, only Cohen and Davis were on 53-man rosters in the NFL in 2018. With regards to Nall, he was on the Bears but was never active in the regular season.
- David Montgomery (acquired via NFL Draft)
- Mike Davis (signed via free agency)
- Tarik Cohen
- Ryan Nall
- Kerrith Whyte (acquired via NFL Draft)
With Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy deciding to revamp their running back room this offseason, monitoring the running back position will be something to watch all throughout training camp.
With Bears training camp officially here, it’s time to preview the running back position for the 2019 season. What are the positional battles to watch? Who’s a lock to make the roster? How many running backs will the Bears carry as they prepare for the regular season?
