Chicago Bears: Kicker makes impressive plea to join team
The Chicago Bears are in desperate need of a kicker and one candidate has offered his services.
The most glaring need on a Chicago Bears roster loaded with talent is at the kicker position. When it comes to every other spot, the Bears have a player more than capable of performing for a Super Bowl contending team.
Yet, their Achilles heel is one that bit them last year and could do the same this year if they don’t get it figured out.
Some Bears fans hoped a reunion with the beloved Robbie Gould was in the making, and he would ride in on his white horse just before the start of the season to save the day, and potentially the Bears’ season.
Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed this week when news broke that Gould had signed a new four-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers that would pay him a total of $19 million. That is a high number for a kicker, and it also eliminated any slim hopes for a sign and trade with the Bears. In other words, Robbie Gould ain’t walkin’ through that door.
So where do the Bears turn now? They could roll the dice with what they have in Elliott Fry or Eddy Pineiro, neither of whom blew the staff away during minicamp. They could also wait to see who might be a training camp cut and try to sign the best kicker available. That approach also comes with its own risks. Heck, I even gave them a name recently in Roldan Alcobendas.
Well, it appears at least one player has taken notice of the Bears pressing need and has made his services available with a video posted to Twitter.
Miguel Recinos, the former University of Iowa kicker was seen in a video posted to Twitter nailing a 70-yard kick outdoors with some wind. Last season, Recinos connected on 17-22 kicks which was good for 77 percent. Not a terrific rate, but he did have a long of 49-yards and appears to have a pretty strong leg, as evidenced by the video.
The Bears have clearly prioritized kickers with strong legs, as well as those that fall into the young and hungry category. They have eschewed the idea of going out to sign a guy like Matt Bryant (at least for now) and instead appear to be looking at an up-and-comer with ice water in his veins. Good luck to them if they can find it — or perhaps, he will find them.
