Chicago Bears: Mitchell Trubisky out of excuses in 2019
By Usayd Koshul
Mitchell Trubisky is entering his third NFL season, however, the Chicago Bears quarterback is officially out of excuses.
It’s no secret that the Chicago Bears believe that Mitchell Trubisky is their franchise quarterback. Since drafting him in 2017, the Bears front office has done everything possible to figure out a way to make Trubisky successful.
However, as he enters his third full season in the NFL, it’s essentially a make-or-break year for Trubisky. Over the last two years, Trubisky has been able to say that he was either a rookie or that he was in the first year of a new offense.
However now, he’s had a chance to experience what playing in Matt Nagy’s system is like, it means that Trubisky should see some growth. But that also means that Trubisky will be expected to thoroughly operate the offense.
Besides just having been in Nagy’s offense for a year, another big reason that Trubisky is out of excuses heading into 2019 is the fact that multiple quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes 2018 season saw him win MVP which effectively sets the bar higher for Trubisky in 2019.
With the team that Trubisky has around him, he doesn’t need to have an Aaron Rodgers-esque performance each week. He just needs to be consistent each week to the point where the Bears are winning and it’s not because guys like Khalil Mack are single-handedly taking over games.
Look, Trubisky did have his moments in 2018. However, one game he was tossing six touchdowns and the next game, he was throwing multiple interceptions. He needs to get to the point where he’s consistent each week.
After the 2019 season concludes, no matter how the Bears season ends, the conversation will shift regarding Trubisky. As of right now, it’s clear that there’s a big divide about what type of quarterback Trubisky is.
One one hand, you’ve got some who say that Trubisky is one of the younger, emerging quarterbacks in the NFL. However, on the other hand, you’ve got some who say that he just isn’t franchise quarterback material.
In the football world, the saying that young players need time to develop and adjust to NFL life has been heard by everyone. In other words, this means that younger players are given time, however, eventually players are expected to produce.
Trubisky is essentially in the same boat now. He’s been in the NFL long enough to the point where people now expect to see him live up to his draft status and perform like the franchise quarterback the Bears believe he is. It may be hard to believe, but Trubisky is out of excuses in 2019.
