Chicago Bears: Robbie Gould explains his current situation
By Ryan Heckman
Training camp is just days away, and Robbie Gould still stays close to home. The former Chicago Bears kicker explains.
We are all aware that the glaring weakness on the Chicago Bears is still at the kicker position. It’s not hard to figure out. We’ve even wondered if Matt Nagy is overthinking the issue and whether or not general manager Ryan Pace has done enough to solidify the position.
Of course, an option which fans were all over at the start of free agency was bringing back former Bears kicker Robbie Gould — until the San Francisco 49ers gave him the franchise tag.
Since then, Gould has refused to sign the tag and remains in Chicago, training and spending time with his family. It is obvious where his heart is, but will he end up in Chicago when it’s all said and done? Right now, it’s still looking murky, and Gould has no plans to report to camp.
On Wednesday, Gould made an appearance at the American Century Golf Championship Celebrity Tournament. The Mercury News’ Cam Inman caught up with Gould there and asked him the nitty gritty questions.
Ultimately, it boiled down to Gould saying he is “not going to commit to making any decisions right now,” per Inman.
The 36-year-old kicker has been around a lot over his NFL career. He’s seen just about everything, done just about everything, and at this point, wants to be close to his family. It’s really that simple.
"“We’ve been negotiating for 17 months and it’s been a complicated situation. I’m at the point where my agent is going to handle it. If there’s anything I need to know about, then I’ll make a decision. When I need to know of something of substance and that I have to make a decision on, he’ll call me. I’ve been able to focus on my training and spending time with my family and being around my kids.”"
Gould went on to say that there is “nothing” that scares him anymore because of what he’s been through over his career (i.e. a lockout, lengthy negotiations, getting cut, switching teams, etc.).
Finally, Gould was asked about his desire to go back to the Bears, to which he responded carefully:
"“I never said I want to go back there. I just said I want to be closer to my family. That doesn’t necessarily mean (the Bears).”"
While he isn’t flat-out saying it, I think it’s safe to say we’ve known for a while where Gould wants to be. It’s purely a waiting game at this point, and it is clear Gould has left the entire situation in the hands of his agent.
