The Atlanta Hawks are the best CURRENTLY rebuilding team in basketball, and it’s not close.

It is an extremely exciting time to be an Atlanta Hawks fan. For starters, the Hawks have a star in the making duo of John Collins and Trae Young, who both posted incredible numbers in their respective first and second professional seasons. Not only did both of them post great individual marks, but the two also compliment one another. Watching these two on the pick and roll this year was a joy. In addition, Young’s offensive, floor-spacing mindset is a great compliment to Collins’ above the rim, defensive style of play.

Outside of these two, Atlanta added Omari Spellman and Kevin Huerter in the 2018 NBA Draft. Spellman isn’t too much to brag about, but a serviceable young player nonetheless. Kevin Huerter, on the other hand, had a great rookie season as an off-ball backcourt partner to Young. He may or may not be the long-term starter for the Hawks, but will absolutely be a part of the core going forward as a solid modern two guard.

In the 2019 Draft, the Hawks absolutely killed it. Adding De’Andre Hunter, a safe bet at the small forward position, and Cam Reddish, a home run swing at the same spot, was genius. Hunter has drawn comparisons to Kawhi Leonard, while Reddish has had Paul George comparisons since high school (coincidence?). Both of these players have great two-way potential as modern NBA small forwards. The three was a positional need for the Hawks, and they grabbed the best two in the draft.

Perhaps the most exciting thing Atlanta has going for it is the competence of the front office. Between drafting well, developing players, making smart trades, stockpiling future assets, and saving cap space for the future, the Hawks are flat out doing it right. Don’t be surprised if the Hawks sneak into the playoffs in 2020 while also continuing the rebuilding process.
