Chicago Bulls: Cases for and against Russell Westbrook trade
By Ryan Heckman
Free agency hot spot of the future?
We’re now in the thick of the old game, ‘devil’s advocate’ at this point.
Here’s the deal: If the Bulls want any chance at landing another top-tier free agent in the future, Westbrook instantly raises those odds exponentially. Granted, that would likely have to wait until the summer of 2021 since next year’s class is no where near as exciting.
Some may argue about Westbrook having played with stars in the past, whom have eventually left (even as recently as the Paul George situation this past week). But, the fact of the matter is, Westbrook is a big name — and, sadly, that’s all you need in today’s NBA.
Look at another example like the Houston Rockets. A couple of years ago, James Harden‘s name and stature helped them land Paul. Now, the relationship might be strained and the Rockets could be looking to blow things up.
Nonetheless, it was the fact that Houston had a star in the first place which lured Paul to Houston.
If the Bulls don’t want to become an immediate free agency destination, then they stand pat. But, if they want a better chance at adding more notable names, then Westbrook should be looked at as a must-add.
