Chicago Blackhawks: Should Toews play with Kane again?

The Chicago Blackhawks had really good production from their top two lines last season, and they will look to keep it going in 2019-20.
The Chicago Blackhawks scored a lot of goals next season. If they can replicate that again in 2019-20 and clean things up in their own zone, they should make a return to the playoffs. A key to that would be their forwards replicating what they did last year offensively. The two biggest names in that scenario are Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.
It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that these two would be a key to anything Blackhawks related. These are two of the three or four best forwards to ever play for the organization. They are both going to the Hall of Fame first ballot and will probably have their numbers retired and possibly even statues. The cool thing is they are still going strong and still have a lot to give.
They both, if you can believe it, had career years offensively in 2018-19. Kane had 44 goals and 66 assists for 110 points. He was simply one of the best players in the NHL last season, and his peers recognized him for that when they nominated him for the Ted Lindsay Award which goes to the guy voted by his peers as the most outstanding player in the league. Kane’s year was better than the year that he won the Art Ross trophy as the league’s leading scorer and Hart Trophy as the MVP of the league.
Jonathan Toews had 35 goals and 46 assists for 81 points. He has been known throughout his career as one of the best two-way centers in the world and has probably left some points on the table to make sure that remained the case. His outstanding season last year showed he still had a lot to give and can contribute offensively at an elite level.
In most of their careers together, which saw them win the Stanley Cup three times, they never played together at even strength. Toews always had Marian Hossa on his line and it was the two-way line that would go out there in a shutdown role that still produced lots of offense. Kane always was on the offensive minded lines with guys like Patrick Sharp. Well in 2018-19 they spent a lot of time together on the top line together and it proved to be a good thing.
The duo of Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome allowed them to do that. They ran the second line just fine and produced at just the clip you would want them to. They all played together at different moments on the power play which allowed them to improve their stats, but both lines were really good offensively at even strength. Strome only played 58 games with the Blackhawks after being traded over from the Arizona Coyotes and he was awesome. He had 17 goals and 34 assists for 51 points in those 58 games while DeBrincat had 41 goals and 35 assists for 76 points.

If that second line can hit the ground running again this season, they should pair on a line while Toews and Kane pair together on the top line. That is probably the best way to maximize offense for this team and it has worked in the past and it can work again. Plus, it is awesome seeing Toews and Kane finally get to play with each other regularly at even strength.
