Chicago Blackhawks: A possible new role for Andrew Shaw
The Chicago Blackhawks have brought in an old friend to provide some help, but things are different since he was last a Blackhawk.
The Chicago Blackhawks have added Andrew Shaw back into the fold in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens. He was a great member of the Chicago Blackhawks during the second half of their dynasty and got his name engraved on the Stanley Cup twice in three seasons. He was in a low pressure situation for him personally because all he needed to do was be the best version of himself and he would succeed. That fact still remains going into his second tenure with the team.
He had a career year in 2018-19 with Montreal in an expanded role playing with some great players. He had 17 goals and 28 assists for 47 points in 63 games. That is a 61 point pace over an 82 game season so if he can stay healthy and continue to produce like that he would be a major addition to this team that already had a lot of offense last season.
He is a smaller guy but he plays big and can be great at winning puck battles and getting the puck to his line mates so they can create scoring chances. This is why his role should expand on this team. He has never played under head coach Jeremy Colliton so it will be interesting to see how he uses him, but there are some ways that he might be able to get the max out of him. Joel Quenneville used him in many different ways and Colliton might be no different but there are a few spots where he’d look really nice.
The idea of this is to look at how the coaching staff will use Shaw in 5 on 5 and power play situations this season and project where he’d be the most successful.
