Chicago Bears: Could Mason Crosby be an option at kicker?
By Usayd Koshul
The Chicago Bears are in search of a new kicker, so could a player from their biggest rival end up being an option?
The Chicago Bears need to figure the kicker position out. The team has spent most of the offseason trying out multiple kickers and with training camp starting in a matter of days and the team only has Elliott Fry and Eddy Pineiro on the roster for right now.
While most fans think that a Robbie Gould reunion could be an option, the only way that Gould ends up coming back with the Bears is if Ryan Pace trades for him. However, a new report has surfaced saying that Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby is a potential veteran cut when the Packers begin trimming down their roster for the 2019 regular season.
Looking from the outside, no Bears fan would want Crosby. Why would the Bears consider a guy who played for their rivals? However, should Crosby become available, he would be an excellent option for the Bears.
Look, the Bears are better off finding a proven guy like Crosby. No disrespect to Pineiro or Fry, but Crosby has been one of the better kickers in the NFL over the last few years and has experience kicking in cold weather, more specifically Solider Field.
Crosby’s experience kicking in cold weather is a big reason the Bears would be wise to monitor this situation. On one hand, Crosby’s age presents a problem as by the time the 2019 season kicks off, he’ll be 35 years old.
Bringing in Crosby would allow for the Bears to have another year to figure their kicking situation out. While there will be factors like salary cap space that could be potential obstacles in the Bears signing him, this could be a potential opportunity the Bears can’t afford to miss.
Looking at Crosby’s stats, he’s hit 98 percent of his extra points and 80.4 percent of his field goals. While he’s had his fair share of misses, he certainly has proven that he can bounce back after a rough performance.
In a hypothetical world, let’s just say that Crosby is cut by the Packers. Imagine the Bears scooping him up and then Crosby kicking the game-winning field goal against the Packers, proving to his former team that there was no point in cutting him. In other words, it’d be like the Mason Crosby revenge tour.
Time is running out for the Bears to figure out the kicking position. While fans dream of a Robbie Gould reunion, Crosby wouldn’t be a bad second option. If Ryan Pace is serious about making the Bears the most complete roster in the NFL, then adding Crosby should be a priority for the Bears.
