Chicago Blackhawks: An extended look at the new guys
John Quenneville
John Quenneville in exchange for John Hayden was a move to give two fringe NHL players a change of scenery. Quenneville never grabbed his full-time spot on a New Jersey Devils roster where he was given all the chances to do so. A late first round pick in 2014, he had high expectations and it just never came to fruition.
New Jersey sent him over so they can add Hayden for some depth and perhaps some toughness in both the NHL and AHL. Quenneville will be given a chance to crack the Blackhawks roster but it might not happen regularly. There are always injuries and performance issues on most teams, so he will surely get some games in the NHL this season but it is hard to see him sticking regularly.
Quenneville has shown he can be a really good AHL scorer and the Rockford Ice Hogs can use some of that. He might spend a decent amount of time there next season and there will be some young players that the Blackhawks are relying on to be NHL players someday playing in the AHL this year. Quenneville will be a guy who can help them while he is down there.
If he comes up to the NHL at any point and makes an impact, that will be free money for the team after making this trade. In 19 games for the Devils last season he had one goal and no assists. in 101 career AHL games, he has 28 goals and 52 assists for 80 points in a league that offense is hard to come by. It just hasn’t translated to the NHL for some reason but the Blackhawks are hoping to unlock it.
