Chicago Bears: David Montgomery getting hyped by the GOAT

It appears the Chicago Bears rookie is getting ready for 2019 the right way.
When the Chicago Bears moves up in the third round of this year’s NFL Draft to select Iowa State running back David Montgomery, Ryan Pace knew he got his guy.
Montgomery represents the elusive, ‘make-you-miss’ runner that can snap off chunk yardage plays and turn small gains into game-changers
He’s exactly the kind of fit — style wise — for Matt Nagy’s offense. In addition to his elusiveness as a runner, he’s also terrific out of the backfield as a receiver. Montgomery is an every-down back who, when paired with Tarik Cohen, presents matchup nightmares for opposing defenses.
From a versatility standpoint, and maybe even a talent perspective, he’s an upgrade over former Bears running back Jordan Howard. The one area where he lags Howard is obviously in the experience department.

Although Montgomery may lack experience, he’s already demonstrating a level of maturity which shows he is wise beyond his years. He’s also showing fans just how much he appreciates the franchise’s history.
On Saturday, Montgomery tweeted out that he couldn’t stop watching highlight videos of the greatest of all time, Walter Payton. Again, it doesn’t take experience to recognize greatness and Montgomery surely understands just how great Payton was and how important he is to the fabric of the franchise.
He has big shoes to fill replacing Howard, but one way to endear yourself early to the fans is to show you appreciate the GOAT.
What would endear him even more to fans, is if he started to break off some runs like Walter. While he’s obviously got a long way to go before anyone starts mentioning him in the same breath as Payton, he does have some moves that are reminiscent of No. 34.
Two areas Payton excelled were making tacklers miss and yards after contact. Coincidentally, those are two of Montgomery’s greatest strengths. In his last two seasons, he’s forced 185 missed tackles. That’s an astonishing number.

As for yards after contact, 892 of his 1,216 yards last year came after initial contact. That’s also an impressive number as you don’t often see shifty running backs who also have that kind of power. That’s why Payton was such a rare talent and why the Bears hope Montgomery could be too.
