3. The Cubs find their long-term fix for second base

I’ve mentioned it several times before, but the Chicago Cubs second base position has been a revolving door. Ben Zobrist, Addison Russell, David Bote, and Daniel Descalso have all seen time at the position. Zobrist had to leave the team to attend to a personal matter and they expect him to be back, likely after the All-Star break.

David Bote is much better served as a super utility guy in my opinion and both Russell and Descalso have left a lot to be desired both in the field and at the plate. Addison Russell was originally going to remain in Triple-A Iowa as he was making his way back from suspension but the absence of Zobrist forced the team to call him up.

The Cubs have a potential superstar in Triple-A Iowa in Robel Garcia, and I expect the front office to give him a shot, again most likely after the All-Star Break. The former Team Italy second baseman has had quite the journey to the big leagues and has been raking between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.

David Bote was signed to a five-year extension earlier this season, so he’s not going anywhere. However, Zobrist is a free agent after this season. The Cubs can send Russell back down to Iowa if they feel he needs to keep working on things and they can release Descalso without eating much money.
