The Chicago White Sox have DFA’d the first baseman and now we can all try and forget about the real reason he was brought in.

The Chicago White Sox have DFA’d their first baseman Yonder Alonso. There are many reasons this is a frustrating move for the team if you are a White Sox fan. The real reason he was brought in the first place, apparently, is because Alonso is Manny Machado‘s brother in law. We all know that the White Sox pursued Machado really hard and signing Alonso and his best friend Jon Jay was a way of trying to recruit him.

Machado ultimately chose to go to the San Diego Padres for a large contract and the disappointment for Sox fans was real. But then, the team started the season and really showed lots of signs of growth and at this point, we are happy that Yoan Moncada is the third baseman and Tim Anderson is the shortstop. Machado is much older and once he starts to decline he will be an albatross contract and you can argue that Moncada and Anderson are already better. At the very least, they are playing better than him at this moment.

Jay has only played a few games with the White Sox so I don’t really have an opinion on him yet, but Alonso has been terrible. This is nothing against him personally and I don’t really care if he is Machado’s brother in law anymore. I care that he had a slash line of .178/.275/.301 with only 7 home runs and a -1.0 WAR. There are many better options for the White Sox to have in their lineup so this move gives them the opportunity to get some of those better options in there.

This also tells a lot about this White Sox management group. Alonso was a bad signing and they recognized it before the All-Star break and did something about it. This is a very young team that when carried by them they are really good, but the depth is atrocious so they are not a better than .500 baseball team yet. The time is coming soon, and we wish Yonder Alonso the best in whatever is next for him.
