Cornerback Duke Shelley

I have touched on Duke Shelley recently, noting how he could potentially replace Sherrick McManis on the depth chart. The likelihood of that happening as soon as this year is very real, especially since McManis is in the last year of his contract.

Shelley is someone the Bears are high on, and was viewed by some as one of the better cornerbacks in all of college football at times last year. The biggest reason he slipped in the draft is due to his lack of size, but his athleticism makes up for that.

The Bears invested one of just a few draft picks in Shelley in the 2019 NFL Draft. That’s key, here. Ryan Pace didn’t have a whole lot of capital to work with for this year’s draft (just five picks) and you have to realize that every single one of his picks should be viewed as a threat to the other folks at their respective positions.

Watching tape on Shelley, I think he has enough explosiveness to dazzle us in training camp later this summer. He very well could be one of those guys who makes a spectacular play every day in practice, like Anthony Miller did last season.

Shelley is going to end up being a steal when it’s all said and done, and I truly believe he will push McManis down the depth chart as early as the preseason.
