Chicago Bears: 3 intriguing storylines heading into training camp
Tight end group is one to watch
One group that I will be keeping an eye on will be the tight ends, who are replete with storylines of their own.
First, there is the injury to Trey Burton, who had surgery to address a sports hernia back in March. Typically, recovery time for this surgery is approximately 7-8 weeks before a player is eased back into regular sports activity. While the exact date is unknown, back at the end of May, Nagy indicated the surgery was “a couple of months ago.” Even assuming it was the end of March, eight weeks would have had him easing into activities about a week ago.
Holding him out of minicamp makes sense. There is no need to rush him back. However, what should grab your attention were comments following minicamp that the team was hopeful he’ll be ready for training camp, which is approximately another five weeks away. Maybe Nagy was just hedging but assuming there isn’t more to the injury than we know, Burton should be on the field at camp. The fact that is in doubt is worth keeping an eye on.
If he’s not able to return, it could open up opportunities for a player like Dax Raymond to make a case for making the roster. It will also give Adam Shaheen a chance to continue to impress and demonstrate he can stay healthy. Finally, it will also allow the coaching staff to take a long look at whether Bradley Sowell can effectively make the transition from offensive lineman to tight end.
How about all those storylines surrounding one position? Should be a fun camp.
