Point Guard Elfrid Payton — Unrestricted

Over his last couple of seasons, Elfrid Payton has struggled a bit with injuries. But, last season, put up arguably his best campaign yet as a pro. Although he only played in 42 games, Payton posted a career-high in assists per game (7.6) while he averaged scoring in double digits as well.

For most of his career, Payton has been a starting point guard. He has the experience, and he’s more of a pass-first guy. This is exactly the kind of free agent point guard the Bulls should be looking for. Of course, finding someone who would come a bit cheaper certainly helps. But, Payton is the real deal.

He is a solid point guard.

Payton doesn’t score the ball at an above-average level, but that’s not necessarily a knock on him. He is what he is, and that’s a facilitator at heart. The Bulls already have scorers in Zach LaVine, Lauri Markkanen and Otto Porter. They don’t need a score-first point guard — simply one who can facilitate at a high level. That’s who Payton is, and the Bulls would be fortunate to hand the starting reins to him.
