Linebacker Danny Trevathan

For the last few years, Danny Trevathan has been one of the very best middle linebackers in the league and, dare I say, he’s been slightly underrated by many. On such a strong defense like Chicago, it’s hard to stand out at times — especially after adding a guy by the name of Khalil Mack.

This past season, the Bears had so many notable names on that side of the ball and it will only continue to be that way. It’s tough to catch folks’ attention with names like Mack, Eddie Jackson and Akiem Hicks on the same defense.

But, the player who will make it the toughest on Trevathan? That’s second-year pro Roquan Smith. Coming into 2019, Smith has every making of a Defensive Player of the Year candidate. The kid is absolutely everywhere. Very rarely do you see a play which doesn’t end with Smith in or near the pile.

Smith didn’t even begin the season as the starter last year, yet led the team in tackles with 122. Trevathan came in 20 behind him with 102. This isn’t a slight at Trevathan, but more of a compliment to Smith.

In 2019, Smith very well could see his own total over 150 tackles. This means less action for Trevathan. Again, Trevathan is still an incredible player. But, the middle of the field now belongs to Smith.
