Chicago Bears: Core players in line for a contract extension
By Usayd Koshul
1. QB Mitchell Trubisky
Let’s get to the biggest name on this list. Everyone knows that the Bears have committed to Mitchell Trubisky for at least the next three years. After the way the Bears traded up for Trubisky in the 2017 NFL Draft, it’s clear that this team believes in him.
There have already been multiple rumors of the Bears extending Trubisky as soon as the 2019 season ends. The advantage of this is that when Trubisky’s actual rookie contract expires at the end of the 2021 season, the Bears wouldn’t have to give him more money then. Additionally, when 2021 does roll around, the team will need to start thinking about extending players from the 2018 draft class.
Trubisky has earned a contract extension due to the potential he’s shown. You could toss out his 2017 season due to the uncontrollable circumstances he dealt with. His 2018 season was far better due to the fact that he had a modern offense around with along with the ideal types of playmakers needed to succeed in the NFL.
For Trubisky, as he heads into 2019, he’ll need to earn every penny of the new contract extension that is going to come his way. However, if he doesn’t show improvement, then it’s clear that the Bears will likely wait another year before deciding to hand him a big contract.
