Chicago Cubs: 5 Round 2019 MLB Mock Draft
By Ryan Sikes
The Chicago Cubs figure to load up on prospects to keep restocking their farm system. Let’s see who they might take in this five-round mock draft.
The Chicago Cubs will get their opportunity to load up on more draft prospects for a farm system that ranked second worst in the major leagues at the beginning of the season the first week in June.
The 2019 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft will be held from June 3-5 in Secaucus, New Jersey. As previously noted, the Cubs have had a track record in the last couple of years of going heavy on pitching prospects after going all in on hitting prospects during the early years of Theo Epstein’s tenure as President of Baseball Operations.
All of the hitting prospects have graduated to the major leagues or have been cast off in trade packages, but now the focus has shifted to developing pitchers. Theo Epstein indicated his plan was to address pitching via free agency and/or trades while the hitting prospects developed.
Guys like Kyle Hendricks, Mike Montgomery, and Jake Arrieta were all part of a trade package and all played an important role in bringing the first World Series to the north side since 1908. However, Jake Arrieta has moved on and both Jon Lester and Cole Hamels are in the twilight of their careers.
The Cubs will be relying on pitching prospects already in their farm system to make an impact as well as ones they might select in June’s draft. The team hold’s the 27th overall pick in the first round of the MLB Draft as the order is determined from a worst-to-first order.
Here’s a look at all where the Cubs will be selecting in the first five rounds of the draft:
- First round: 27th overall
- Second round: 64th overall
- Third round: 103rd overall
- Fourth round: 132nd overall
- Fifth round: 162nd overall
Vinnie Parise and I made our selections based on which prospect fills a need or has great value in each round. Let’s see how things shook out.
