Chicago Bulls Rumors: 4 reasons to trade for Lonzo Ball
By Ryan Heckman
2. Core is set to compete
Another reason why going after Ball makes sense is because this core is set. At the moment, the Bulls have a fairly strong starting group. All that’s missing is competent point guard play and depth.
If you presented a starting five consisting of Ball, Zach LaVine, Otto Porter, Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter, I firmly believe they would be exponentially more competitive than they were a year ago. Plus, with the defensive edge Jim Boylen is trying to instill with these young guys, Ball would fit right in.
The Bulls can’t really afford to begin another rebuild at this stage, as they’ve added young talent over the last few years and will continue to do so with whatever draft picks they end up keeping and using.
Ball is obviously only entering his third season and fits with what Chicago is trying to do, schematically. He comes cheaper than most, due to being on his rookie deal, and the Bulls aren’t going to be able to find much better options.
With options like LaVine, Markkanen and Porter, Ball’s job would be to put them in position to score points. That’s something he’s more than capable of doing, and the core would benefit from having him on board.
