Chicago Bears: Game of Thrones NFC North player comparisons, Part II
Matt Nagy – HC, Bears (Daenerys Targaryen)
This brings us to Daenerys Targaryen herself. Daenerys is one of the most popular characters in the show Game of Thrones. She and her brother were the last Targaryens to survive after Robert Baratheon’s war claiming the throne. They escaped to Essos and eventually, Daenerys was betrothed to Khal Drogo, the leader of the Dothraki.
Daenerys became what is known as Khaleesi, essentially the queen of the Dothraki. As her journey continues, she becomes extremely sympathetic to those she feels are helpless or enslaved. While at the same time, she has shown cold-blooded tendencies to those she deemed enemies.
Daenerys makes some great decisions throughout her path and entrusts others to help her in areas she is less aware. She has taken those who were never supposed to amount to greatness and inspired them to succeed in ways they did not even know they wanted.
Matt Nagy has done something similar in his first year of coaching. He took a team that has only won eight games over two seasons and led them to 12 victories. 2018 was also the Bears first playoff appearance since 2010. Nagy did such a great job that he won Coach of the Year.
His aggressive offensive playcalling is what helped turned the team around, but more importantly, he created a culture among the team that inspired them to greatness. He also trusted those around him, Vic Fangio for example, to lead in areas he was not as wise. This matches Daenerys for sure.
