Chicago Bears: Assessing 2019 NFL Rookie of the Year odds
By Ryan Heckman
Why no Montgomery?
There are some outlets which have David Montgomery listed amongst their top 20. But, for Vegas to leave him out? That’s incredibly odd — and disrespectful.
The fact of the matter is, Montgomery will be given a ton of work. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up with 18-to-20 touches per game between carries and receptions. The Bears have a ton of versatility in the back field, and the running backs will be featured a lot. That starts with Montgomery.
Especially with the Bears having such an elite defense, boasting a guy like Montgomery who can handle the work load and wear down opposing defenses is an enormous advantage. Montgomery is the perfect mix of several types of backs. But, his best trait is his ability to shed tacklers. Go see for yourself. Do a little research on Montgomery’s film, and you’ll see how difficult it is to tackle him.
I don’t even have to talk much more about Montgomery. I just find it hilarious that guys like Grier, along with the tight ends and even the majority of the receivers, made the list above Montgomery. Very rarely will you see a wideout be in the conversation for Rookie of the Year, let alone a backup quarterback or tight end.
If you ask me, Montgomery should be in the top five — period. He’s that good, and his usage will warrant such attention. Just wait and watch.
