The Chicago Bears added a valuable weapon in Iowa State running back David Montgomery.

The Chicago Bears moved up in the draft in a trade with the New England Patriots for the second consecutive year to get Iowa State running back David Montgomery. The team was looking for Jordan Howard’s replacement and Montgomery fits the bill of everything Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy are looking for.

Montgomery played in all three years at Iowa State rushing for over 2,900 yards and was a threat to catch passes out of the backfield as well. The latter is specifically why the Bears chose to move on from Howard, who improved marginally in his pass catching abilities. However, the talent that Montgomery exudes seems like a much more natural ability.

"“I thought he handled himself great,” Nagy said. “He looks like he’s in great shape. Caught the ball really well. These camps aren’t too big on running, so it’s a lot of receiving, and I was really impressed.” – via ChicagoTribune"

A lot of the early pro comparisons have Montgomery projected to be a Kareem Hunt type player. If that’s the case, not only will the Bears running back corps be better but the entire offense will benefit as well.

Montgomery could end up being the starting running back when the season opens with Mike Davis providing support in third down or goal line situations. The team still has the electric do-it-all running back Tarik Cohen as well.

All good signs as we head into training camp.
