Trade Number One: Aaron Sanchez to the Cubs

In this first trade, the Cubs pay a reasonable price to acquire a massive rotation upgrade.

That upgrade comes in the form of Aaron Sanchez. Sanchez, a 26-year old right-handed starter, was one of the players listed in the rumored Blue Jays firesale.

Sanchez is a former All-Star and American League ERA Title-Holder but has dealt with multiple injuries throughout the last few seasons. This season, Sanchez has been lights-out with a 3.09 ERA in seven starts.

Sanchez is under contract through the 2021 season and carries reasonable value with control and a good track record. However, the injury concerns certainly hurt Sanchez’ trade value, which makes him a risky bet for the Cubs.

Regardless, the Cubs would love to add Sanchez to the rotation, forming a formidable group of five starting pitchers.

The Blue Jays asking price won’t be too cheap, but the Cubs should be able to make this one happen without parting with either of their two top-100 prospects.

In order to accomplish that, the Cubs would send a trio of young prospects to Canada. The first of which is Adbert Alzolay, the Cubs #4 prospect. Alzolay missed most of last season with an arm injury, but is in Triple-A and is just months away from being able to make an impact at the major league level. Alzolay would headline the deal as a potential long-term replacement for Sanchez.

Next is Cole Roederer, the Cubs second-round pick in last year’s draft. While Roederer was picked much earlier than scouts thought he would, Roederer has performed well in his professional career and is the Cubs #5 prospect. Roederer would be a nice addition to the Blue Jays farm system, as they would be able to slowly progress the 19-year old.

Finally, capping off the deal is Nelson Velazquez. Velazquez is the Cubs #11 prospect and is slated to see major league action as soon as next year. Despite his high upside, the Cubs outfield is fairly crowded, which is not great news for Velazquez. Parting with him wouldn’t be all that hard considering the Cubs loaded outfield, and his high upside makes him a target in any trade for the Blue Jays.
