The Chicago White Sox are probably going to be without the guy who is at the front of their current rotation for a while and it could be trouble.

The Chicago White Sox got some less than ideal news this week. They are placing their ace Carlos Rodon on the10 day injured list and reinstating Lucas Giolito. The issue isn’t that Rodon will miss a start or two. It is the possible extent of the injury.

He is going on the injured list with inflammation in his throwing elbow. There is fear that Tommy John surgery is going to be the necessary solution. The team plans on having an update and a plan on how Rodon will handle this soon. He is only on the 10 day IL so we should find out his fate soon enough.

If Tommy John elbow surgery is the case, he will surely miss the rest of the season and a chunk of next season. This is after future star Michael Kopech had the same surgery that caused him to miss the last month of the 2018 season and all of the 2019 season after having the same surgery. It is a bit of bad luck for the White Sox organization from a pitchers point of view, but it is just a little bump in the road.

It isn’t great to not have Rodon and it may cost the White Sox a few extra wins this season, but adversity is going to happen while rebuilding. It is up to the guys who get an opportunity in his spot and his teammates to get it done in his absence. Rodon is going to do whatever he needs to do to get back to full health and the show will go on. The starting pitching hasn’t been great so far this season at all, so hopefully, this can at least be a spark for the boys to step up.

It has also been reported that even though Rodon might be done for a while and the team designated Ervin Santana for assignment, they will not use this as a reason to call up top pitching prospect Dylan Cease. He still might come up later in the season, but not because of this injury. Giolito coming back and adding in Dylan Covey are the likely replacements.

It is not a guarantee that Rodon will need Tommy John but it is looking that way. Whatever the case may be, they need to keep pushing forward in this rebuild.
