Chicago Blackhawks: Top 5 moments of the 2018-19 season
4. Gustafsson Scores in Overtime
The Blackhawks had a lot of success down the stretch at certain points this season. One of those big moments came on a Saturday Night in St. Paul Minnesota. February 2nd, 2019, the Minnesota Wild and the Blackhawks were both in an intense battle for playoff positioning at the time so that gave this game a lot of hype.
It really lived up to the hype as it took overtime to get the winner decided in this one. It was not easy for either team to collect a standings point in this game. It was as back and forth of a game as you can watch in a hockey season. Neither team ever led by two and both teams had a lead at different points in the hockey game. You knew early on that it would be this type of game and that both teams would need to dig deep to get the win.
The Wild scored early on in the hockey game to go up 1-0 and then the Blackhawks went up 2-1 after two unanswered goals. After that, the third period is where this game became a memorable one. The Wild tied the game at two before Jonathan Toews gave the Blackhawks the lead again just a few minutes later. Then, of course, the Wild tied it again with just over four minutes left in regulation. You knew this one would come down to who made the final mistake.
That final mistake would be made by Wild defenseman Ryan Suter. He got a delay of game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass with 19 seconds left in regulation, setting up a Blackhawks overtime power play. You know what happens next. Erik Gustafsson sent an absolute blast past Wild goalie Alex Stalock. Giving the Blackhawks the OT win and leaving Minnesota with two points.
