Chicago Bears Draft: Players worth trading up for
By Ryan Heckman
Safety Johnathan Abram, Mississippi State
In my opinion, one of the can’t-miss 2019 prospects on defense is Johnathan Abram our of Mississippi State. For the Bears, he would fit right in and could play a variety of positions.
Abram almost plays like a linebacker at times, wanting to come up and be more involved towards the line of scrimmage than he does back in coverage. He is an alpha on the field, too, and his attitude is infectious.
Think of Abram as the Akiem Hicks of his defense in college. He plays nasty. He plays with no mercy, except at the safety position.
I will say this: Abram is one of the most likely candidates to have to check is playing style as a pro or he may get flagged due to his aggressiveness. To an extent, I actually love that. He’s a mean safety, and he comes in hot.
In his last year with the Bulldogs, Abram totaled a whopping 99 tackles in 13 games, including nine of those for loss. He also added in five passes defensed, three sacks, two picks and a forced fumble. Abram is active, and as a future starter, he’d benefit greatly from being groomed this year.
