Chicago Bears 2019 NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Replacing Jordan Howard
By Ryan Heckman
Round 7, Pick 222
One of the lesser talked about needs of the Bears this offseason is at the tight end position. Trey Burton is the solidified starter, but behind him, the team doesn’t have a whole lot. Third-year tight end Adam Shaheen is still out to prove he deserved to be taken as a second-round pick back in 2017. Behind Shaheen is Ben Braunecker, who is more depth than anything.
If the Bears are looking late in the draft, Caleb Wilson out of UCLA may be the best tight end on the board at pick 222. Last year with the Bruins, Wilson caught 60 passes for 965 yards and four touchdowns as one of the focal points of the offense.
For a taller tight end, Wilson has great ability to catch different types of passes. Whether he’s reaching high or low, his long arms give him an advantage in that realm. Wilson is quick, having ran his 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds at the Combine.
He’s definitely a pass-catching tight end first and will have to put on some muscle if he is to be involved as a blocker. One of the intriguing facts about Wilson is that he played quarterback in high school, giving Nagy another guy who could potentially chuck it on a trick play, if need be.
