Rookie Impact

The White Sox are all about their rebuild right now. They have sent away lots of veteran players in an attempt to build for the future and have sustained success. Since they declared rebuild they have brought up Yoan Moncada, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Michael Kopech. There are plenty more where that came from. A guy like Luis Robert might be a year away and that is when they really expect to start winning.

This year, there should be two huge pieces that make their debut. The first, of course, will be Eloy Jiminez. He will be their starting left fielder on opening day and hopefully be one of the team’s star players for the next decade and a half. They got Eloy in a trade with the Chicago Cubs in 2017 for pitcher Jose Quintana. Eloy has basically been the organization’s prized possession ever since. He has a real chance to be the rookie of the year and if all goes well he will help this team win more baseball games.

That trade with the Cubs looms even larger because of the fact that they also got pitcher Dylan Cease in return for Quintana. Cease will not start the season with the big club but they will call him up sometime throughout the summer. It will likely be in the second half of the season around the trade deadline. The way they handle Cease will probably be similar to how they handled Kopech in August of 2018. They randomly called him up and he made his first major league start a few days later.

The young guns have everything to do with the future of the Chicago White Sox. General manager Rick Hahn developed a plan and he has stuck to it. They struck out on the Manny Machado/Bryce Harper sweepstakes but that does not mean that he will deviate from his plan. It is not about one guy as he has always preached. It is about a collective of guys playing the right way and developing properly.
