Ty Montgomery, Free Agent

One of the more familiar faces to Bears fans out of this year’s free agent crop is veteran running back and former wide receiver Ty Montgomery. Having spent his first three and a half seasons in Green Bay, Montgomery was traded to the Baltimore Ravens last year. The Ravens now have Mark Ingram, along with a couple of other backs, and Montgomery looks like he’ll end up somewhere else eventually.

Because the running back market is no where near as kind as it was years ago, Montgomery would likely come cheap. He’s the total opposite of Howard, but that might end up being a good thing within this system.

As a former wide receiver, Montgomery has proven he can catch the football. Over his four NFL seasons, Montgomery has averaged above eight yards per reception, but also nearly five yards per carry on the ground.

He’s a slippery back who can get upfield quickly. He’s also shown an above average ability to break tackles, even though he’s a smaller back. Still young enough at 26 years old, Montgomery would be a strong compliment to what the Bears already have in the back field and could potentially hang around a couple of years if the Bears chose to go that route.
