15. Cornerback Justin Layne, Michigan State

Height: 6-foot-2

Weight: 192 pounds

40-yard dash: 4.5 seconds

Vertical Jump: 37.5 inches

3-Cone Drill: 6.9 seconds

If you look at pure size and frame, Justin Layne is essentially exactly what you want at the cornerback position. He has the length needed to disrupt, that’s for sure. Layne has solid speed, and while he’s not a burner by any means, he makes up for it with great footwork and his smarts. Layne can stay with just about any receiver simply based off of his route recognition.

As a former wide receiver, Layne knows how to make a play on the football. Here’s a mind-blowing stat for you: Over his final five games, Layne notched a ridiculous 11 pass breakups (via NFL.com).

Comparing him to a current Bear like Kyle Fuller, Layne is a step ahead of where Fuller was as a rookie. If you remember, Fuller had a tough time turning around in order to make a play on the football. Layne is the exact opposite. He has a strong feel for when the ball is in the air and knows when to turn in order to make a play for it.

While he only posted three interceptions in three seasons, Layne still broke up 23 passes in the last two years (15 in 2018). If the Bears want a corner and can’t get one of the guys we’ll touch on later, Layne is a nice consolation prize.
