17. Cornerback Hamp Cheevers, Boston College

Weight: 169 pounds

40-yard dash: 4.52 seconds

Bench Press: Eight reps

Hamp Cheevers is a player I recently highlighted as a sleeper candidate at the cornerback position. I love him a lot because of the fact that he seems like the underdog. Most of his scouting reports nag on his lack of size, but watching him play, I see a straight-up dog.

Cheevers is as hungry as they come at the corner position. As a pro, he’ll probably have better success moving into the slot, which is fine. The Bears have gotten ample production out of their slot over the last couple of years, and it’s a crucial position for their defense.

Last year, Cheevers came up with a whopping seven interceptions. He was only a 1-year starter at Boston College, which is another knock on him. Lack of starting experience is a valid concern, but his one year of production was incredible.

I would trust Chuck Pagano to utilize Cheevers ideally within his system, and continue to accelerate his development. Any time you can get a player who is quick to make a play on the ball while in the air, you have to take that opportunity. Cheevers is a mid-to-late round prospect at the moment.
