Chicago Bears: 2019 NFL Draft Prospect Big Board
By Ryan Heckman
18. Safety Mike Edwards, Kentucky
Height: 5-foot-10
Weight: 205 pounds
(No Combine due to a broken thumb)
Kentucky boasts one of the better overall secondaries, in terms of future NFL prospects. Mike Edwards could end up being a solid starter as a pro, but being unable to perform at the Combine may have hurt his stock just a little bit. Fortunately for the Bears, this could benefit them as they possess solely mid-to-late round picks this year.
Edwards is a little small for the safety position, but he plays hard. In a system like the Bears have, he might even double as an option to play slot corner in the future as well.
One thing the Bears love out of their defensive backs is to be able to blitz and get into the back field in a hurry. Edwards can do just that. He’s prolific in stopping the run and finds himself behind the line of scrimmage consistently. Last year, he posted a career-high 9.5 tackles for loss.
Edwards is one of those players who is constantly in on every play. Back in 2016, he led his team in tackles with an even 100. The last two seasons, he’s accumulated 178 tackles combined. He has a nose for getting to the football. With a year of grooming, Edwards could be an ideal fit in the Bears’ scheme.
