By Ryan Heckman
20. Cornerback Sean Bunting, Central Michigan
Height: 6-feet
Weight: 195 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.42 seconds
Bench Press: 14 reps
Vertical Jump: 41.5 inches
Our first prospect the Bears should have up on their board is the perfect example of a Ryan Pace pick. Sean Bunting comes from a smaller program in Central Michigan, but has a lot to like and could wind up being a diamond in the rough.
At 6-feet, 195 pounds, Bunting has ideal size at the cornerback position. Physically, he’s very gifted and performed well enough at the Combine to improve his stock. Although there were a lot of quick defensive backs at the combine, his 40-yard dash was still impressive and proved he had plenty of speed. Not to mention, that 41.5-inch vertical jump was one of the best we saw at this year’s Combine.
Bunting is phenomenal at the 50-50 ball. Because of his athleticism and long frame, it gives him the ability to go up and high point the football better than a lot of guys at his position. Over the last three seasons, Bunting has come up with nine interceptions (including a career-best five in 2017). He also defensed 15 passes over those three years.
Two key points to note about Bunting: First of all, he allowed under 39 percent completion last season (per Lance Zierlein of NFL.com). Second, Bunting is a ball hawk. He follows the football. He desires the football. At times it can get him caught, because he doesn’t always play up on his man and instead plays the football, but for the most part this is a desirable trait. Right now, Bunting projects anywhere from Rounds 5-7.
