Over the last two years, the Bears have invested heavily in the tight end position. But, that’s because Nagy values the position strongly. In his offense, you need tight ends of different size and strength. Trey Burton solidifies the multi-faceted tight end who is the primary pass-catcher. Adam Shaheen is still developing, but has shown flashes of being that go-to red zone target.
To round out the tight end group, Josh Oliver would be a nice depth add. Moreover, he’s a small school prospect with a diverse history of positions. Oliver had played wide receiver in high school and switched to an edge rusher, where he originally played at San Jose State. Because the team became short on tight ends, Oliver slid back to the offensive side — and stuck.
Oliver is a high-character player, first and foremost. He’s the kind of guy Pace and Nagy want in the locker room. He’s a hard worker and has done everything asked of him at each position played over his career.
Once he took over the tight end spot, he was one of the primary targets. Defenses knew they had to game plan around him, but Oliver still produced. He showed he can make the tough grabs in traffic and also go up and get the 50-50 balls. If anything, Oliver’s athleticism and character are worth the pick.
