Chicago Bears: Sleeper NFL Draft prospects at cornerback
By Ryan Heckman
Isaiah Johnson, Houston
If I were to tell you there’s a 6-foot-2 cornerback with 4.4 speed, your interest should be immediately peaked. Coming out of Houston, that’s exactly what senior cornerback Isaiah Johnson possesses. He’s a tall frame with long arms while also boasting blazing speed.
Like the aforementioned Brown, Johnson is yet another converted wide receiver. In fact, he played wideout for the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Houston before switching sides. Because he has limited experience at corner, some of the fundamentals are lacking at times. Missed tackles, due to poor form, have been put on tape here and there. But, he has the attributes to become a good corner as a pro. He just needs some polishing.
Johnson totaled a strong 66 tackles in his final year at Houston, to go along with two picks and seven passes defensed. Again, like Brown, having experience as a wideout helps Johnson in the ball-skills category immensely.
Having the speed to keep up with some of the faster wideouts out there, Johnson does need to work on his footwork. He’s fast, but needs to be better with actually sticking with his man. Working with a coach like Pagano would certainly help that lack of aggressiveness come to fruition.
