Chicago Bears: Sleeper NFL Draft prospects at cornerback
By Ryan Heckman
Hamp Cheevers, Boston College
Speaking of Bryce Callahan and Buster Skrine, this is a kid who could ultimately help the Bears at slot corner. Coming out of Boston College, Hamp Cheevers boasts a pretty impressive 2018 résumé. He was just a one-year starter, but tied for first in interceptions in all of the FBS with seven.
On top of his seven picks, Cheevers came up with seven passes defensed. He enters the NFL Draft as a potential pick between rounds four and seven, though. This can be attributed to his lack of size overall, but that’s where a defense like the Bears would help immensely.
Cheevers stands just 5-foot-9 and weighs in around 170 pounds. Because of his small stature, it will be very tough for him to play outside as a pro. But, in the slot, he could find a lot of success.
He possesses great ball skills, as you could have assumed by his seven picks last season. He’s instinctive and makes plays on the ball consistently. With a front seven like Chicago, he’d have his fair share of plays to make, should he find himself on the field at all.
For now, Cheevers would be solid depth. Being coached by one of the best in the business when it comes to defensive backs, Chuck Pagano, Cheevers would find himself in a perfect situation with the Bears.
