Chicago Cubs: Why this was the worst offseason of all-time
By Jason Parini
The 2018 collapse
If you had asked any Cubs fan if they expected the Cubs to fall short of reaching the Division Series in 2018, you’d be hard-pressed to find more than one person in ten who felt that the team wouldn’t be playing a best-of-five set.
The Cubs entered September in first place and spent a total of 86 days in first place throughout the season. Their largest division lead was on September 2, when they sat five games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place.
Alas, it wasn’t meant to be for the Cubs.
The North Siders struggled throughout much of September, ultimately tying the Brewers for first place through 162 games and hosting the Brew Crew on October 1 for the NL Central Division tiebreaker.
The Lovable Losers lost a tough game and would stay home to face the Colorado Rockies for the National League Wild Card Game, which they would lose in heartbreaking fashion in 13 innings.
The division collapse and Wild Card dagger were some of the worst moments in recent memory for Cubs fans, and that’s saying a lot.
Add in the devastating Bears loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in January and this offseason just couldn’t have gotten any worse.
