Chicago Bears: Under the radar free agents on offense
By Usayd Koshul
3. WR Tommylee Lewis
Despite just adding Cordarrelle Patterson via free agency, the Bears also just lost Josh Bellamy and Kevin White isn’t coming back. What this means is that the fourth and fifth spots on the Bears depth are wide open for wide receivers. Essentially, it could be a three-way competition between Lewis, Javon Wims, and Patterson.
Although the Bears wide receiver room features Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller, and Allen Robinson, in a league like the NFL, one can never have too many weapons on offense.
An undrafted free agent in 2016, Tommylee Lewis is merely a player that’s looking for an opportunity in the NFL. While in New Orleans, he was buried on the depth chart on offense behind players like Michael Thomas, Mark Ingram, and Alvin Kamara. Additionally, all he did was handle return duties on special teams.
Considering Ryan Pace’s ability to find diamonds in the rough in both the NFL Draft and in free agency, Lewis could be the perfect option for the Bears defense. Additionally, considering he’s just 26-years old, he has the potential to be a long-term option for the Bears even after next offseason.
While return duties are his specialty, one downside to Lewis’s game is that he has very limited experience in the passing game. In New Orleans, he had just 20 receptions over a three-year period. However, since he’s averaged 12.6 yards per reception in his career, he has what it takes to be a big play threat for the Bears.
While coming to Chicago would mean that Lewis is on likely on the bottom of the Bears depth chart again, if he has a strong training camp, then there’s a chance that he’s the fourth wide receiver on the Bears roster.
