Currently, the Bears have Adam Shaheen and Trey Burton on the roster listed as the teams primary tight ends. Although there are other names on the roster like Daniel Brown, Chicago could still bring in players in case someone gets injured.

A major reason that Austin Seferian-Jenkins makes sense for the Bears is due because there is no knowing what to expect from Shaheen or Burton in 2019. It’s easy to say that both will come back healthy and have breakout seasons, but nothing is guaranteed in the NFL.

Burton showed flashes of being a future star for the Bears, while Shaheen missed half the season with a sprained ankle. Essentially, Shaheen’s growth was stalled due to his injury. This is a major reason as to why Jenkins make sense for the Bears.

A former second-round pick in 2014, Jenkins hasn’t found a permanent home in the NFL yet. He’s bounced around and played for three teams (the Buccaneers, Jets, and Jaguars) while hauling in 116 receptions and scoring ten touchdowns over the course of his five-year career.

The reality with Jenkins is that you’re not getting a guy who’s going to score every game, but he is a player that can provide valuable play and be of assistance on special teams. Most fans may not like this move, however, the Bears need to do everything possible if they want to have a chance at playing in the Super Bowl next year and being an NFC powerhouse.
