Minor in-house signings

Tight End Ben Braunecker

Deal: 2-year, $2.7 million

After releasing veteran Dion Sims, the Bears chose to bring back Ben Braunecker, who will more than likely serve as the fourth tight end — that is assuming the Bears add another tight end via free agency or the draft.

But, even as a third option, Braunecker has great hands and athleticism at the position. To get someone as cheap as this, who is familiar with the offense and showed some potential in the past, is a sound signing by Pace.

Offensive Lineman Rashaad Coward

Remember the guy who switched from defensive line to offensive line last spring? He’s back, and thank goodness. Rashaad Coward showed a lot of promise up front and will be working both at guard and tackle. He’s young, he’s learning and he is coachable. At a minimum deal, you can’t ask for more from a depth signing.

Outside Linebacker Isaiah Irving

Isaiah Irving was one of the more fun players to watch in training camp and the preseason last year, because the edge rusher position was a huge need. The Bears experimented with a lot of guys at that spot, and Irving made some plays throughout the summer. Like Coward, he’s young and very coachable — I am more than happy to see him back.

Defensive End Roy Robertson-Harris

Always a physical freak, Roy Robertson-Harris finally began to break out a little bit last year. Working next to such elite players, he had more room to get going and show what he’s capable of with a little help. The Bears definitely want as many options rushing the passer as possible, and Robertson-Harris is no slouch. This was also a smart decision.

This is only the first week of free agency, and it’s not over. Keep it here and we’ll have more analysis and reaction to all of the Bears’ coming moves. Don’t forget, Pace and the Bears still have roughly $20 million in cap space as we speak.
