Chicago Bears: Free agents no one is talking about
By Ryan Heckman
Safety George Iloka
Whether the Bears move on from Amos or not, they have a need at safety. Adding depth to the position should be one of the biggest offseason priorities. One of the guys rarely talked about over the last few months is former Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings safety George Iloka.
Last year, Iloka spent his lone year with the Vikings and only started three games. But, prior to the 2018 season, he had some very productive years with the Bengals. In four seasons where he started all 16 games for Cincy, Iloka averaged over 70 tackles per year. He also compiled 32 passes defensed and nine interceptions in a total of five active seasons with the Bengals.
What I like most about Iloka, when looking at his fit with the Bears, is his size and aggression. Iloka is a staggering 6-foot-4. At the safety position, that puts him in a great spot in terms of making plays on the ball — especially when your front seven is as good as it is in Chicago. Believe me, Iloka would have more than enough opportunity to make a play on an errant throw or two in Chicago. Not only that, but those guys make his job a lot easier in stuffing the run.
Iloka is just 28 years old at this point and coming off a season where he didn’t play much, so there hasn’t been a lot of talk about him. But, within the right system and coaching, I believe he can still be a very good player in this league.
