Chicago Bears: Bargain free agent running backs to consider
By Ryan Heckman
Javorius Allen
Javorius Allen is the prototypical back in a system like Nagy’s. He’s been used as a pass-catching back for most of his career, but has also shown great strength at the goal line. That’s a little odd, right? Typically your pass-catching back isn’t the powerful type who can punch it in from the 2-yard line.
If you are a fantasy football aficionado, you’ll know Allen’s name well. If you’re a fantasy football player who happened to own guys like Alex Collins, Gus Edwards or Kenneth Dixon over the last couple of seasons, just the mention of Allen’s name will upset you.
Allen has been known as one of those “vultures” of fantasy football. For some reason, head coach John Harbaugh has trusted Allen inside the 5-yard line more than any other back in the last couple of years. Therefore, he’s scored the touchdowns that his teammates should have scored instead.
In four seasons with the Ravens, Allen scored a total of 14 touchdowns on between the run and passing game. His 3.7 yards per attempt are a little skewed because of the amount of short-yardage carries he’s received, but he would be a valuable add as a third back within this system.
The only question mark is his 6.3 yards per reception. It’s a little low, even though he’s been fantastic at catching the football out of the back field. He has great hands, but not as many versatile moves after the catch.
