Much talk has been made about the Chicago Bears adding to the running back position this offseason. Which free agent bargains might make sense?

Two years ago, if you would have told me the Chicago Bears would be looking to trade Jordan Howard, I would have laughed in your face. But, here we are, and the Bears are sporting a much different offensive playbook under Matt Nagy than they were a couple of years ago under John Fox.

It goes without saying, that is a good thing. The Bears gave fans a glimpse of what a modern NFL offense looks like last year, and I believe it is just the tip of the iceberg for this roster.

This offseason could end up being a pretty interesting one. Since last year, Howard’s name has been surfacing within trade rumors. This year, it appears things have not changed one bit.

The Bears have had a fantastic one-two punch at the running back position between Howard and Tarik Cohen. But, in Nagy’s offense, many believe the Bears could do even better than Howard.

First of all, by trading Howard, the Bears would obtain draft capital. This is one thing the Bears lack big time in 2019. Now, some teams might be panicking without a pick in the first two rounds. But, not the Bears. Those two picks netted Khalil Mack and Anthony Miller — yeah, to say those trades were worth it is an understatement.

If the Bears do indeed trade Jordan Howard, they could choose to replace him either via free agency or the 2019 NFL Draft. Most would like to see it happen in the draft, as this year’s crop of backs is intriguing and could see the Bears find a steal in the third or fourth round.

If the Bears do look at adding a back via free agency, they probably won’t be making a huge splash. Their money will most likely be tied up in guys like Adrian Amos and/or Bryce Callahan this offseason. With that said, there are some free agent running backs who could come at a bargain. Let’s look at a few of those and who makes the most sense.
